In his contribution to the 19th Munich Management Colloquium, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn will show how the Volkswagen Group aims to reconcile economic success with ecological objectives. The company's aim is to make environmentally friendly mobility accessible worldwide. For this reason, the Group continues to drive forward the development of low-consumption and low-emission technologies and vehicles. At the same time, the company is working to continuously increase resource efficiency at its 62 plants worldwide.
The Volkswagen Group, headquartered in Wolfsburg, is the largest car manufacturer in Europe and currently employs more than 430,000 people worldwide. In 2010, the Group's nine brands delivered more than 7.2 million vehicles to their customers for the first time. The company is continuing this qualitative growth course in the current year and aims to significantly exceed the previous year's result.
Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn has been Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of AUDI AG since January 1, 2007. In addition, Winterkorn has been Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche Automobil Holding SE since November 25, 2009.
Winterkorn was born on May 24, 1947 in Leonberg (Germany). He studied metallurgy and metal physics at the University of Stuttgart from 1966 to 1973. From 1973 to 1977, Winterkorn was a doctoral student at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research, where he received his doctorate in 1977. Winterkorn began his professional career in 1977 as a technical consultant at Robert Bosch GmbH.
Winterkorn has received numerous academic honors in recent years. He was appointed honorary professor by the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 2003, by the Dresden University of Technology in 2004 and by Tongji University in Shanghai in 2007. The Chemnitz University of Technology awarded Winterkorn an honorary doctorate in May 2011.
