Fraport AG, Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide, based in Frankfurt am Main, was founded in 1947 and is one of the leading international companies in the airport business. The company that operates Frankfurt Airport has been listed on the stock exchange (MDAX) since 2001 and also holds stakes in other domestic and foreign airports. With almost 21,000 employees, the company achieved a turnover of 2.44 billion euros in 2012. Organizationally, Frankfurt Airport is divided into four strategic business units, three service units and 13 central units. The strategic business units represent self-contained specialist units that ensure that Fraport's customers receive products and services from a single source. The service units serve as cross-company support functions for the business units. The central divisions assume overarching central functions within the company.

Peter Schmitz was born in 1950 and has been with Fraport AG since 2001. From 2002 to 2009, he was Divisional Director of Ground Services with over 5,000 employees. Peter Schmitz has been a member of the Executive Board since 2009 and is responsible for Operations. This includes the strategic business units "Flight Operations and Terminal Management, Corporate Security", the service units "Real Estate and Facility Management" and "Information and Communication Services".

Before joining Fraport AG, Peter Schmitz held various positions and key functions in air force logistics at national and international level for more than 25 years. For example, he headed the logistics department of the NATO Air Force Europe Central in Ramstein and was responsible for the operational support of the German Air Force's operational units.
