Dr. Mark Wössner studied mechanical engineering in Karlsruhe and joined Bertelsmann AG at the age of 30 as an assistant to the management. In 1970, he became Technical Operations Manager at Mohndruck, the largest offset printing company in Europe. His appointment as Managing Director of Mohndruck in 1974 was followed two years later by his appointment to the Executive Board of Bertelsmann AG. Wössner assumed overall responsibility for the Printing and Industrial Operations division and was appointed Chairman of the Executive Board of Bertelsmann AG in 1983. In November 1998, he became Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bertelsmann AG and Chairman of the Executive Board of the non-profit Bertelsmann Stiftung.

Wössner is currently Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Citigroup Global Markets Deutschland AG & Co. KGaA and is also a member of several supervisory boards, including that of DaimlerChrysler AG. In May 1997, the American Chamber of Commerce honored him with the Leo M. Goodman Award for his services to German-American relations.
