Munich Airportwhich was founded in 1949 and has its headquarters in Munich, operates Munich Airport. The shareholders have remained unchanged since 1973: the Free State of Bavaria with 51 percent, the Federal Republic of Germany with 26 percent and the City of Munich with 23 percent. The Group, which has around 7,000 employees, operates exclusively at Munich Airport. It is also active in the consulting business for a number of international airports. The purpose of the Munich Airport Group is the operation of the airport and the associated ancillary business. The Group comprises Flughafen München GmbH and twelve subsidiaries.
Dr. Michael Kerkloh has been at the helm of Flughafen München GmbH since September 2002. He is Chairman of the Management Board and also holds the office of Labor Director. Born and raised in Ahlen, Westphalia, Kerkloh studied in Göttingen, London and Frankfurt after completing his A-levels and military service. He graduated with a degree in economics in 1979 and was a lecturer in economic policy at the University of Frankfurt until 1985, where he also obtained his doctorate (Dr. rer. pol.). Before starting his career in aviation at Frankfurt Airport in 1987, Kerkloh worked for a year as an assistant to the management at Norman Rentrop Verlag in Bonn. At Frankfurt Airport, Kerkloh was responsible for operational planning, organizational management and the coordination of aircraft handling, the operational management of which was later transferred to him. In 1995, Dr. Michael Kerkloh was appointed to the Management Board of Flughafen Hamburg GmbH, where he was one of two people with overall responsibility for the airport company's fortunes. His areas of responsibility included ground handling services, commercial administration and human resources. Dr. Michael Kerkloh is one of the three European representatives on the World Governing Board of ACI, the global umbrella organization for commercial airports. He is also a member of the transportation committees of the Federation of German Industries and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Munich and Upper Bavaria. He has been a member of the Advisory Board of the German National Tourist Board since December 2008 and President of the Export Club Bavaria since July 2009.
