Dr. Kurt Mühlhäuser

Chairman of the Management Board
SWM Stadtwerke München GmbH

biography

Dr. Kurt Mühlhäuser, Chairman of the Management Board of Stadtwerke München GmbH, spoke about the strategy of Stadtwerke München GmbH in his presentation Opportunities for municipal companies in the energy market on the development of a former public authority-like institution into a highly competitive company.

Dr. Kurt Mühlhäuser has been at the helm of Stadtwerke München as Chairman of the Management Board since 1995 and has shaped the course of the Munich-based infrastructure company ever since. During this time, SWM has transformed itself from a loss-making municipal enterprise into an efficient and competitive commercial enterprise. This required major entrepreneurial reform steps, such as the transfer of Stadtwerke München to a private legal form, the development of a modern group structure, the development of new business areas and, last but not least, SWM's consistent focus on the market and its customers. In 1995, SWM had an annual loss of 135.3 million marks, and the profit distributed to the city for the 2007 financial year will be of a similar magnitude.

Stadtwerke München (SWM) is the municipal infrastructure service provider for Munich. Specifically, SWM stands for a secure and resource-conserving supply of energy and natural drinking water from the foothills of the Bavarian Alps to the Bavarian metropolis. The transport subsidiary MVG is responsible for the subway, bus and streetcar services. SWM also operates one of the most modern swimming pools in Germany. SWM is also an important economic factor, with a turnover of around 4.5 billion euros and around 6,500 employees.

In his contribution to the 15th Munich Management Colloquium, Dr. Kurt Mühlhäuser will shed light on the opportunities for municipal companies in the energy market using the strategy of Stadtwerke München.
