biography
Mr. Dr.-Ing. Sami Atiya heads ABB's Robotics and Factory Automation division and is a member of the company's Group Executive Board. In June 2016, he was appointed to ABB's Group Executive Board as the then Head of the Industrial Automation and Drives division. The Robotics and Factory Automation division employs around 11,000 people worldwide and is shaping the future of flexible manufacturing and intelligent machines with its solutions.
Before joining ABB, Atiya held a number of management positions at Siemens in Germany from 1997 to 2015, including CEO of the Computer Tomography division of Siemens Healthcare in Erlangen from 2008 to 2011 and CEO of the Mobility and Logistics division in Munich from 2011. Prior to this, Atiya was Managing Director at Harald Balzer & Partner in Stuttgart. He also worked at Robert Bosch in Germany and in the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence research division of the Fraunhofer Institute for Information and Data Processing.
Atiya earned an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Cambridge, USA, and a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Wuppertal and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, specializing in robotics, sensor technology and artificial intelligence. Prior to this, he graduated from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical engineering and automation.
