Wolfgang Mayrhuber, Chairman of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG spoke in his presentation "Megatrends in the aviation business and strategic success factors for Lufthansa" about Lufthansa AG's focus on profitable growth in the highly competitive aviation market.
Wolfgang Mayrhuber has been Chairman of the Executive Board of Lufthansa AG since June 18, 2003. Wolfgang Mayrhuber is Chairman of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. He heads the Lufthansa Aviation Group with its business segments Passenger Business, Logistics, MRO, Catering and IT Services with around 94,000 employees worldwide. He is also at the helm of Lufthansa Passenger Airlines. Lufthansa stands for high technical and flying competence, recognized service and a worldwide unique route network, which it offers together with the partners of the Star Alliance.
Wolfgang Mayrhuber has worked for Lufthansa for more than 35 years. He started on February 1, 1970 as an engineer in the engine maintenance department in Hamburg and in the following years passed through all management levels of all technical divisions before being appointed Head of the Technical Directorate and Chief Technical Officer on November 1, 1992. At the beginning of the 1990s, he headed the Lufthansa restructuring team. This restructuring task was followed in October 1994 by his appointment as Chairman of the Executive Board of the newly founded Lufthansa Technik AG, whose successful development into the leading global service provider with 25 companies worldwide today was largely shaped by Wolfgang Mayrhuber. He held this position until his appointment to the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG on January 1, 2001. On April 1, 2002, he was also appointed Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board of the Aviation Group, and has been Chairman of the Executive Board since June 18, 2003. In March 2005, his contract was extended until December 31, 2010.
In addition to his Executive Board duties, Wolfgang Mayrhuber holds various supervisory board mandates. He is a member of the supervisory boards of Fraport AG, Eurowings Luftverkehrs AG, Thomas Cook AG, Münchner Rückversicherungs-Gesellschafts AG and BMW AG. He also holds important mandates at international level. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Swiss International Air Lines AG and of the Board of Directors of HEICO Corp (Florida/USA).
Wolfgang Mayrhuber has been elected Chairman of the Association of European Airlines (AEA) for 2006, of which he has been a member of the Steering Committee for many years. He is also a member of the Strategy Committee (SPC) and the extended Steering Committee, the so-called Board of Governors of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). In addition, he has chaired the IATA Strategy Committee (SPC) since June 2007.
Wolfgang Mayrhuber was born on March 22, 1947 in Waizenkirchen/Austria. He studied mechanical engineering at the Höhere Technische Bundeslehranstalt Steyr/Austria and at the Bloor Institute/Canada. In the fall of 1990, he completed Executive Management Training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston.
In his contribution to the 15th Munich Management Colloquium, Wolfgang Mayrhuber will focus in particular on the question of how the value creation of an internationally operating generics company must be structured in order to ensure sustainable and continuous value contributions and thus the existence of the company.
