OSRAM GmbH, Munich
biography
In his presentation "OSRAM: 100 years of Lighting Innovation", Martin Goetzeler spoke about approaches to increasing value and the value creation structures in an internationally oriented company.
The basic hypothesis of the presentation by Martin Goetzeler, CEO of OSRAM, is that a high level of vertical integration is the basis for Osram's innovative strength in the lighting market. Innovations are the focus at OSRAM in order to generate customer satisfaction and added value. Today, optoelectronic semiconductors (light-emitting diodes, organic light-emitting diodes, lasers, IR) and innovative lighting systems (e.g. high-pressure discharge lamps such as xenon car lamps combined with intelligent electronics) are a focal point of the innovation strategy. In addition, energy-efficient products are an important driver of innovation for OSRAM in the future - their importance has increased more and more in the context of climate protection.
The 100th anniversary of the OSRAM brand provides an opportunity to take a closer look at milestones in lighting innovation against the backdrop of a sustainable innovation strategy. This shows that both a strongly global value chain and a high level of vertical integration, flanked by efficient cost management, are essential building blocks for OSRAM's ability to innovate and therefore for its success.
OSRAM is one of the two leading lighting manufacturers in the world. In fiscal 2005 (ending September 30, 2005), the Munich-based company generated sales of 4.3 billion euros, 88 percent of which was generated outside Germany. OSRAM is a high-tech company in the lighting industry: around 40 percent of sales today come from innovative products. The company, which has a strong international focus, employs over 39,000 people worldwide, supplies customers in around 150 countries and produces in 49 manufacturing plants in 19 countries.
