Dr. Michael Mertin, Chairman of the Board of JENOPTIK AG in Jenaspoke in his presentation on "The role of customer structures, trends and operational excellence in the realignment of a technology company using the example of Jenoptik".
Jenoptik AG is a listed company in the field of optoelectronics based in Jena, Germany. As a specialist for optical systems, industrial metrology, lasers & materials technology, traffic safety as well as defense and civil systems, the company employs around 3120 people with annual sales of € 543 million in 2011. Its customers include international companies in the semiconductor and semiconductor equipment industry, medical technology, the automotive and automotive supply industry, defense and security technology and the aviation industry. After German reunification in 1991, the company was founded out of the former VEB Carl Zeiss Jena. Today, Jenoptik AG is present in almost 70 countries. The company also has production sites in the USA, France, Switzerland and holdings in India, China, Korea and Japan.
Dr. Michael Mertin studied physics at RWTH Aachen University and subsequently obtained his doctorate at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (FHG-ILT) in the field of laser material processing and surface technology. After a ten-year career at Carl Zeiss, Dr. Mertin joined JENOPTIK AG as Director of Technology/Operational Business. Since July 1, 2007, he has been Chairman of the Management Board of JENOPTIK AG. In addition, Dr. Mertin is on the board of Spectaris, a member of the Federal Executive Committee and the Thuringian State Board of the German Economic Council, a member of the University Council of the Technical University of Ilmenau and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF), Jena.
